Soccer Trying to Make it in the Football World
In most countries, the name of the game sound alike. Words like football, fussball, futbol, futebol… don’t just sound the same, they are the same game. In the U.S., however, they call it soccer. Major League Soccer (MLS) as an American professional soccer league has been around for some time now.
Unlike other American major league sports, MLS does not dominate the sport’s public attention on global scale, nor its champion is crowned as the ‘World Champion’. MLS has been going through constant development. Did it gain significant public and media attention in the world football? No!
Soccer as the 2nd, 7th or 10th most popular sport in the U.S. doesn’t make a great difference, the American public will still follow the NFL, , MLB NHL or NBA. The world public would follow those leagues with same attention as they are world’s most prominent sports leagues.
In recent years with the globalization of media, the world sports scene has started to change; in that process, English football league, Premiership, promotes itself as ‘The Greatest Show On Earth’ and is in fact the world’s most popular and most watched sporting league, with a current worldwide viewership of half a billion people and media income for seasons 2007 to 2010 worth over $5 billion.
If the world will watch football leagues like English Premiership or Spanish La Liga, who will watch the American major league sports other than domestic spectators? Will a part of the American public turn to watch overseas football leagues as well? Such questions made soccer be an issue in the U.S sports.
Every now and then, the MLS officials would wake up from the drowsiness of being in shadows of Top 4 American major leagues around the time when World Cup takes places and it becomes evident how immense the game of football is in the terms of world public interest, media attention, sponsors.
As the noise around World Cup passes, the MLS would fall back in drowsiness. It was not to be like that after the World Cup 2006 in Germany when the world public had clear picture of European football’s modern stadiums, multi-million player contracts… the world sports spotlight got a hold on football.
This time it’s not the MLS who is to take the initiative of promoting MLS, it’s the whole of American professional sports entertainment industry. It is an economic opportunity where the money revolving around the world football was too great to be missed or discarded.
In the summer of 2007, U.S. soccer attempted to take over the world football by storm by offering David Beckham a $250million contract, the most expensive football player contract in history of the sport, some described it as the deal to bring Beckham to America is thought to be the biggest in sporting history. MLS sent out a message to the world.
In the midst of summer when European leagues were between the seasons and the waters were still, MLS got the wanted exposure with news stories being dominated with the Beckham family moving to LA. Did the stories overtake the world football media and public attention in favor of MLS yet? No!
Is $250 million worth of exposure in the long run? Time will tell. Autumn came, European and international leagues are in full swing, the world sports news publish less articles about Beckham, LA Galaxy and the MLS. To make things worst, LA will hardly make the play-offs, giving the media less to write about.
In the league that has had an overall lost of more than $350 million in the first 8 years after its foundation (a BusinessWeek report from 2004), where at the present time only two teams, LA Galaxy and FC Dallas, are profitable with 3 additional teams expected to be profitable within a year, a $250 million one-player investment seems like a gamble. If so, what are the odds?
In recent years, several notable players chose to make the step away from the bigger leagues of Europe and South America for a financially good contract with teams from the Gulf countries. The headlines reported rich transfer deals, though there was no to little follow-up in media coverage of those leagues.
Not to be forgotten, prior to David Beckham’s arrival, MLS attempted to gain exposure with Freddy Adu, a player under the age of 16 that was crowned as the next Pelé. Adu received significant media attention, the world knew he’s playing for DC United of the MLS.
Many may or may not know that Adu, this past summer at the age of 18, signed a contract in Europe with Benfica FC – Portugal. Prior to joining Benfica, Adu spent some time during summer in the Man Utd’s training camp, Alex Fergusson did not give him the reason to stay.
Benfica paid to the club from Salt Lake City $2million for the player’s release note and Adu will receive $1.2million per year, solid but not the contract that tops the news. Adu was not on Benfica’s Champions League match roster against Milan on Sept. 18th, in compare a player like Messi at the current Adu’s age was already among the starting 11 for the football giant FC Barcelona.
The MLS didn’t appear to have gained substantial attention for the sport with Adu, nor contributed to his development into the world dominant player as expected. Through history, some of the best players of all times played soccer in the States, including Pelé, Beckenbauer, Eusebio…
After the decades long attempts that did not give hoped results for the success of U.S. soccer, what difference Beckham’s playing (currently on a 6 week absence due to the injury) may makes now? Let’s have a brief look at the MLS, a professional soccer league that started in 1996 with more than 10 seasons of experience under way.
Logistics and facilities: On the day of publishing this text, September 27th 2007, Beckham’s LA Galaxy is playing against the KC Wizards. SPORTiana.com, as the author of this text, had the insight in MLS through KC Wizards in the summer of 2006, a year prior to Beckham’s arrival in the MLS.
At that time KC Wizard’s head coach complained about having himself and 2 more assistant coaches to run the team’s training, forcing him to leave several players from 26 man roster sitting on the bench because of not being able to have them all on the field during trainings at the same time.
The training facilities included one open-air field and the in-door field with gym used by the NFL team KC Chiefs, within the Arrowhead Stadium complex. The Wizard’s open air-training field was situated next to the fence aside KC Chiefs training fields.
Grass on the Wizards field was almost separated turfs on the ground as hard as a rock, a field where many players would pass on training in order to avoid injuries. A head coach, 2 assist coaches, fitness trainer… NFL stadium and facilities… small office space at the corner of a stadium… it would be quite a contrast to the clubs from leagues where Beckham previously played.
Players: Majority MLS players come in the league as drafted college players. College soccer usually means player’s playing for a full ride scholarship with the first pro contracts signed at the age of 22 or so. In other countries, first pro contracts are usually signed at the age of 18, at the age of 22 the player is coming out of a 4 year contract and managers have a better understanding of a player’s capabilities in pro football.
This means college players are 4 years behind. By signing a first pro contract at the age of 22, they would come out of the 4 year contract at the age of 26, at that time, major world football clubs would rather invest their money in a 22 year old’s prospect who has also had 4 years of pro football experience.
College players hardly pass over playing in the MLS (players’ first pro contract) on their way to better paid leagues as most foreign clubs would not sign a college league soccer player with no pro football experience at the age of 22.
Prominent American players like DeMarkus Beasley ($2million to PSV – Netherlands, currently for £700,000 with Rangers – Scotland) or Tim Howard ($4million to Man Utd – England, currently with Everton after being loaned), joined MLS directly from high-school without playing college soccer, just like Freddy Adu.
For an average football fan with the choice to watch a variety of matches, e.g. the giants of the game squaring up in domestic leagues like this past weekend when it was Man Utd vs Chelsea in England, Barcelona vs Sevilla in Spain, Roma vs Juventus in Italy, PSV vs Feyenoord in the Netherlands… Boca Juniors games in Argentina, Lyon in France… there’s little space for MLS.
A football fan wants to see the competitiveness, passionate fans, decades-long fierce rivalry between the clubs, tradition, the world’s best players, established players with reputation of playing for prestigious clubs, ultra-modern football-specific stadiums, most of which the MLS does not offer.
The MLS needs to gain the interest of the American public and media in order to gain the same interest with the world public. Hard-working, attractive all-around players like Eddie Johnson of the KC Wizards or DC United’s Jaime Moreno, who proved their quality in this summer’s Copa America 2007 are the prototype players for a successful competitive league.
The MLS’s proposed soccer-specific modern stadiums for all clubs are a step forwards. German Bundesliga witnessed tremendous boost of public interest and media attention on domestic and global level prior to and after the World Cup 2006, with a legacy of great new and renewed old stadiums.
The MLS ought to internationalize as much as possible, the English Premiership did it, when foreign billionaires started buying clubs, world class players arrived in even great number to make it the most watched and profitable football league in the world.
Many writers have speculated on why football is not as popular in the U.S. as it is in some other countries, most of them point to the fact that the game does not have enough scoring. Changing rules of the game in favor of having more goals per game may be beneficial this time around.
Football is a powerful force, it already changed the North American major league sports philosophy, MLS clubs are competing in the Super League and the Copa Sudamericana, The New York Red Bulls new stadium will feature a full “European-style” roof, in 2007 MLS started selling ad space on the front of jersey (a floor of $500,000 per shirt sponsorship), following the practice of the international football.
As the Latin American immigration increases in the US, so is the interest in football. With football being the most popular recreational sport for both boys and girls, the MLS has potential. In 2006 Don Garber, MLS Commissioner, expressed his expectations for the league’s clubs to be profitable by 2010 overall.
LA Galaxy’s merchandise sales through Beckham’s next 4 four years with the club may not top $600 million as it was during his time with Real Madrid, still an MLS player made onto the covers of Sports Illustrated magazine and gather a crowd of 66,000 spectators at a packed Giants Stadium.
In the words of David Beckham about his move to MLS: “I’m coming there to play football… I’m not saying me coming over to the States is going to make soccer the biggest sport in America”. It’s about taking one step at the time, if soccer aims to make it in the football world.

Runners-up spot up for grabs
After a comfortable 2-0 victory against Greece in their opening game, South Korea were brought back down to earth in dramatic fashion by an emphatic defeat to a ruthless Argentina side. Huh Jung-Moo’s players competed well with the South Americans until the third goal was conceded and there was enough to suggest that they can still get through the group with a positive result.
• Park wary of Nigerian power
• Fan blog: A love of African football
• Fan blog: The beginning of the end?
Led by captain Park Ji-Sung, South Korea proved to be an effective outfit against Greece, combining solid defensive organisation with attacking flair through the likes of Lee Chung-Yong Park Chu-Young. The players will be hurting after the Argentina result, but as long as the sound team ethic remains intact, Huh’s side should be able to progress.
Nigeria’s task is simple. They must beat South Korea and hope that Argentina defeat Greece. If that happens, they will progress to the second round on goal difference, a reward of sorts for keeping the deficit against Argentina down to a single goal, while South Korea capitulated. The Super Eagles have a team full of talented individuals and against both Argentina and Greece showed great promise in the attacking third, though the main problem has been finishing the chances that have been created. Lars Lagerback’s side will need to be at their penetrative best to beat South Korea, but will have the support of a continent hoping that Nigeria don’t become the second African side to be eliminated.
South Korea player to watch: Yeom Ki-Hun. One of South Korea’s most dangerous outlets, Kim has proved to be effective as either a left-winger in a 4-4-2 formation or as the left-sided forward in an attacking trio alongside Park Ji-Sung and Park Chu-Young. A tricky player with bags of pace, he will be asked to test the inexperienced Nigeria right-back Samuel Inkoom.
Nigeria player to watch: Vincent Enyeama. Nigeria’s star at the 2010 finals so far, he has been instrumental in keeping the Super Eagles’ defeats respectable, with FIFA naming him man of the match for his displays against both Argentina and Greece. A mistake against the Greeks was overshadowed by numerous other saves and he has displayed consistent catching and shot-stopping ability – as a certain Lionel Messi will testify.
Key Battle: Dickson Etuhu v Kim Jung-Woo. With Sani Kaita suspended, there will be more responsibility for Nigeria’s tough-tackling defensive midfielder Etuhu. He struggled to do the job of two men after Kaita was sent-off against Greece but his athleticism and physicality was impressive against Argentina and he will be charged with stifling Park Ji-Sung and playmaker Kim. A busy central midfielder with a very effective pressing game, Kim has the ability to pick a telling pass and comparisons with Paul Scholes are heightened because of his tendency to be booked for rash challenges.
Trivia: On the day after giving up four goals to Argentina, South Korea goalkeeper Jung Sung-Ryong had some good news: his wife giving birth to their new baby boy.
Stats: South Korea has failed to advance from the group stage six times, the third-highest total in World Cup history. The only teams not to advance as often as South Korea are Scotland (8) and Mexico (7).
Odds: Nigeria (3.75), South Korea (2.60), the draw (3.25) are all on offer at Bet365, while Nigeria to lead at half-time but South Korea to win is at 34.00.
Prediction: South Korea were embarrassed by a hugely talented Argentina side, but proved against Greece that they are capable of winning against a side of lesser quality. Nigeria have flattered to deceive so far and it should be the continent of Asia and not Africa that will have a representative advance to the second round.
Tuesday 22nd June 2010
Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium
Kick-off: 19:30
Lagerback confident Eagles can be super
Nigeria coach Lars Lagerback is confident the Super Eagles will finally show their worth in the crucial Group B showdown against South Korea.
The African side goes into the encounter in Durban on the back of two straight defeats in their opening World Cup matches.
“I am very positive about our game,” said Lagerback. “Let’s hope we can show that an African team can play well and get a result.”
Lagerback expects a battle from start to finish against the 2002 semi-finalists, who beat Greece before losing 4-1 to Argentina.
“It’s going to be difficult,” he said. “But this is a World Cup and every game is tough.
“I nevertheless believe we can win. I think the team has the right attitude. We have a really good team and I hope we can show it to the world.”
Despite losses to Greece and Argentina, Lagerback’s men can still qualify for the last 16 provided they beat South Korea and the South Americans take three points from Greece.
“We hope Argentina will help us along the way,” he said. “But we have to concentrate on our game and get a result. As a coach, nothing is impossible and Greece could beat Argentina but really I expect Argentina to win that game.”
Should Nigeria fail, Lagerback has neither confirmed nor denied if this would be his last game in charge of the Super Eagles.
“Every coach always prepares to stay longer in a tournament,” he said.
“We haven’t discussed that between me and the federation. We will see after the World Cup.”
Lagerback has not ruled out making changes to the side that lost 2-1 against Greece.
Nigeria captain Kanu could be given playing time having sat out their opening two matches.
“I could make changes,” he said. “Everybody in the team wants to play this game. Kanu is in the picture and it’s quite possible he could play.”
The former Sweden coach said the team has not been affected by the death threats received by Sani Kaita after he was sent off in the 2-1 defeat to Greece.
“It’s not a good thing,” he said. “I think it’s very sad that this situation comes out.
“But it’s something that we have to handle and I think the players have handled it really well.
“I was also happy to see how the players supported Kaita in the team’s meeting.”
The 61-year-old is confident left-back Taye Taiwo and Uwa Echiejile will feature in the match after both players sustained minor injuries against Greece.
South Korea coach Huh Jung-moo is confident his side can reach the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time on foreign soil.
The Taegeuk Warriors are second in Group B alongside Greece on three points and know that victory over Nigeria would secure a place in the next round provided Greece fail to beat group leaders Argentina in the other pool game.
“We are going to keep an eye on the other match,” said Jung-moo. “But the important thing is for us to play a good game and get a good result.
“Our players up until now have been preparing for the round of 16. We are almost there.
“We have been preparing for this for almost a year. This is the last match before we reach our goal and we are really going to fight hard in order to achieve this.”
South Korea began their campaign with an impressive 2-0 win over Greece, but lost 4-1 to a rampant Argentina on Thursday.
Jung-moo believes his side have not been affected by that heavy loss.
“We are simply looking forward to progressing to the round of 16,” he said. “We left behind us the game against Argentina and our only focus is on beating Nigeria.
“My players are confident and are ready to play this important game. I believe in my players and I think we can do a good job. We have 23 players that have potential and we have a strong idea as to what we as a team have to do to come out triumphant.”
Jung-moo has not ruled out making tactical alterations for the game and said: “We have a different strategy for each match. Perhaps we were a little bit defensive when playing against Argentina.
“But I don’t want my players to focus on just attacking against Nigeria. I want my team to play a balanced game in order to win.”
Jung-moo could give veteran forward Ahn Jung Hwan some playing time against Nigeria.
Ahn, who made a name for himself after scoring the golden goal to eliminate Italy from the last 16 at the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan, has not featured in his team’s first two games in South Africa.Watch Live Streaming online broadcast internet tv fifa world cup Tuesday 15th June 2010.Watch World cup football 2010 live on your pc laptop or mobile devices at a very cheap rate. How can i watch the match Watch Live Streaming online?Watch Live Streaming match with no hassle, easily watch the match Watch Live Streaming.match live feed live blog, commentary, match websites.Which website is the mest for watching the match live online.live feed.barbarians tv live.match wise prediction.broadcast direct.match analysis 1st and 2nd half.wining chances match.Watch in fullscreen and widescreen.wk broadcast.stream wk.Watch the match on your mobile device.Which channels broadcast the match live on internet feed.analysis and prediction. You can tune in and watch live stream streaming online broadcast coverage without the need to miss any of the action,Cup 2010 Highlights, Preview.Watch live highlights. Greek tragedy awaits against awesome Argentina
As the half-time whistle approached in Greece’s match against Nigeria, Otto Rehhagel’s side were staring a group stage exit in the face. But Dimitrios Salpingidis’ goal – amazingly Greece’s first ever at the World Cup – brought them level and with Nigeria reduced to ten men, the Pirate Ship went on to record an historic victory.

Defeat to South Korea in the opening game was made all the more disappointing because of the tame performance, but it was rectified as Greece mustered a significantly improved display against the Super Eagles to give themselves a chance of progress from Group B. Now Rehhagel, the oldest coach in World Cup history, must mastermind a way past the most intimidating of obstacles, Diego Maradona’s Argentina.
Comparing the individuals at both sides’ disposal makes for grim reading if you are associated with Greece. The likes of Salpingidis and Theofanis Gekas are certainly no match for Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain on paper, but Rehhagel has made his name by springing the most shocking of upsets. But even if the spirit of Euro 2004 is invoked on Tuesday, one feels it may still not be enough to overcome a hugely impressive Argentina side.
Higuain spurned several opportunities in the narrow 1-0 victory over Nigeria but the Real Madrid striker was at his prolific best in his last outing, netting a hat-trick against South Korea. Argentina have been inspired by the irrepressible Messi, who seems determined to prove that he can succeed where Ronaldinho failed – by proving his credentials as one of the world’s best on the biggest stage of them all. For Maradona, it’s simply a case of “same again please boys”, and if his players heed that call, there is little hope for Greece.
Greece player to watch: Giorgos Karagounis. The”Greek Gattuso”, as he is affectionately known, is not just a tenacious midfield dynamo, but the Greeks’ creator-in-chief. Capable of playing in either defensive or attacking midfield, Karagounis has drifted between the two roles in the opening two games – looking particularly dangerous in an offensive capacity against Nigeria. Greece are renowned for their ability from set-pieces and Karagounis is the man they rely on to deliver.
Argentina player to watch: Carlos Tevez. The industrious Tevez failed to find the net in the first two fixtures but he has continued to be an effective outlet in harassing opposing defenders. He continues to demonstrate a high work rate and despite Diego Milito and Sergio Aguero waiting in the wings, Tevez’s overall contribution to the team should mean he retains his place even if he continues to fire blanks.
Key Battle: Dimitrios Salpingidis v Gabriel Heinze – Salpingidis’ purposeful display against Nigeria resulted in the Greece forward netting the equalising goal and he has the potential to be a menace when drifting out to the wings where he will look to exploit Jonas Guttierez’s lack of defensive nous and Heinze’s lack of pace. Argentina continue to be dominant in attack but it’s at the back where question marks remain, with Heinze and defensive partner Martin Demichelis prone to lapses in concentration.
Trivia: There are eight Panathinaikos players in Greece’s World Cup squad, the largest representation by one club in any World Cup team. There are three clubs with seven representatives in one World Cup squad: Bayern Munich (Germany), Barcelona (Spain) and April 25 (North Korea).
Stats: Gonzalo Higuain (age 22 years, 189 days) became the youngest player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup match since Florian Albert (20 years, 261 days) against Bulgaria in 1962. Only two other Argentines aged 22 or younger have scored multiple goals in one game at the World Cup: Diego Maradona (age 21) in 1982 and Carlos Peucelle (21) in 1930.
Odds: Greece(6.00), Argentina (1.61), the draw (3.80) are all on offer at Bet365. A 1-0 win for Greece may seem like a long shot but it’s priced at 13.00.
Prediction: Greece have to go all-out to win the game and they have proved under Rehhagel before that they are more than capable of holding on to one-goal leads at major tournaments. But their desire to get forward will open them up, and with Messi & Co waiting to pounce, Argentina have more than enough quality to emerge as winners.

Rehhagel: Argentina not just about Messi
Greece coach Otto Rehhagel has a plan to contain Lionel Messi in the final Group B encounter but admits Argentina have plenty of other threats which need taking care of.
World player of the year Messi is the stand-out player in a squad of immense talent and Rehhagel believes just to focus on the Barcelona star would leave them open to failings elsewhere.
Having secured the first World Cup win in their history last time out against Nigeria, Greece have a chance of qualifying for the second round if they can better South Korea’s result against the point-less Nigeria.
“I am aware we are playing against Messi, the best player in the world,” said Rehhagel.
“I am not going to tell you how we are going to stop Messi because we don’t give secrets away.
“But wherever he turns up we will try to attack him – but no team has been able to stop him yet.
“For the game Carlos Tevez will not play and Diego Milito will take his place but it makes no difference because Argentina have a lot of world-class players.”
However, Konstantinos Katsouranis, celebrating his 31st birthday, gave an indication of what the plan was.
“One player cannot stop Messi but a team as a whole, yes, we can limit him and that is what we are going to do.”
Rehhagel admits his team’s chances against the South Americans are slim but, considering some of the shock results so far at this World Cup, the veteran German has not given up hope.
“Every player has to play 110% and the game starts at 0-0,” he added. “We have a chance and at the end I hope we don’t say we have missed an opportunity.
“We will try to find the right way to hold our own in the individual positions to provide resistance.
“We will just see how we are going to stand up against the Argentinians.
“It is a big game for us because Argentina have world-class players but we have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”
Argentina coach Diego Maradona has dismissed suggestions he might rest Messi, insisting it would be a “sin” to deprive the public of seeing the best player on the planet.
Prior to the start of the World Cup there had been concerns about Messi`s state of health following a gruelling season with Barcelona and the 22-year-old then played the full 90 minutes in Argentina`s opening two matches against Nigeria and South Korea.
With Argentina having won both those games to establish a three-point lead at the top of Group B heading into the final round of fixtures, it might have crossed Maradona`s mind to give Messi a break for the clash with Greece.
That prospect seemed even more likely as Maradona tested a radically different team in training to the one that beat South Korea 4-1, with Messi one of those not involved.
However, Maradona insisted the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year would feature in the match in Polokwane.
“Lionel Messi always wants to play and I thought I should give him a break (in training) but if you have a player as good as Leo, who is the best player in the world, I think it would be a sin not to give Messi to the people, to the team, and leave out the player who can certainly make the difference in a match,” said Maradona, whose side are not yet guaranteed a place in the last 16 as three teams can still finish on six points in Group B.
“We of course wanted to give Lionel Messi a break (in training). He will play.”
Maradona also played down Messi`s lack of success in front of goal.
The Barca ace had plenty of chances to score against Nigeria and South Korea but could not make the most of them, with great goalkeeping denying him on a number of occasions.
“If Messi is having a bad run then let him continue with that bad run because I’m extremely pleased with Messi`s performances,” said Maradona.
“He goes out to play and help his team-mates. Leo helps define the match and creates things for the other players.”

“World Cup a defining moment for hosts”
South African president Jacob Zuma has dedicated the first World Cup on African soil to Nelson Mandela. There is hope among FIFA and South Africans generally that the 91-year-old – the first democratically-elected president of South Africa when he came to power in 1994 – will be well enough to attend at least part of the opening match of the World Cup between the hosts and Mexico on Friday.President Zuma hailed Mandela’s role in securing the right to host the finals back in May 2004.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 60th FIFA Congress this evening, he said: “Nelson Mandela worked hard that we should win the right to host this tournament. We dedicate the World Cup to him.”There are a few moments that define a nation’s history. We stand on the threshold of one as we draw closer and closer to Friday, June 11 when the World Cup officially begins.”What an honour and what a privilege for this 16-year-old democracy. Our country has become a stage for the international community to celebrate humanity, achievement and friendship.
“We would like to thank FIFA for their constant support. You refused to believe the pessimists who said South Africa would not be able to host this tournament.”Zuma also relayed a message sent to him from Mandela, which read: “Today marks yet another significant day in the history of South Africa’s democracy.”We know that as ambassadors of the 208 (member association) countries you represent you will reaffirm our message against racism. We wish you every success in your deliberations.”FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Friday’s opening match would be the culmination of a “love story” between him, his organisation and the African continent.

“We started a love story because we trusted Africa, we have confidence in Africa and that is why we have decided to host the World Cup in South Africa,” he said.”If you have had the opportunity to be in the region of Sandton yesterday or today then you will have realised that the fan-fest is already on.”If somebody still has a doubt that the World Cup is not connecting people in Africa, then come and look at this.”Blatter was proud of the role FIFA has played in South Africa over the years, from the expulsion of the old apartheid national association in 1976 through to the re-acceptance of a newly-constituted South African Football Association in 1992 – two years before the first democratic elections.

Tomorrow marks the start of the Congress itself, when the 208 member associations of FIFA will vote on a number of issues put forward for discussion. Not on the agenda but clearly in people’s thoughts is the bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, with bid committees taking the chance to lobby association officials in an Expo fair after the Congress breaks up.The hosting rights for 2018 and 2022 will be decided at a FIFA executive committee meeting in December.

Fifa World Cup 2010
South Africa will be the host for the 2010 World Cup, which will be staged in a variety of South African cities including Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Pretoria, Durban, and Bloemfontein. The tournament will begin on June 11, 2010 and conclude exactly one month later on July 11. Johannesburg, the country’s largest city, will host the championship match in Soccer City Stadium, which is currently undergoing renovations to be new and improved in time for the World Cup.
Although the big event is still 18 months away, a long and grueling qualification process has already begun. South Africa automatically qualifies for the field of 32 teams, but the 31 other spots are still up for grabs. Qualifying matches began in August of 2007 and will finish in November of 2009. The draw ceremony to place the 32 finalists in groups will be held in December of 2009.
At the moment, various qualifying tournaments are taking place around the world. World Cup hopefuls are vying for 13 spots among European nations, five spots for African teams (in addition to South Africa), four or five for South America, three or four for North America, Central America, and Caribbean, and either no spots or one for Oceania.
In Asia, Australia and the Korea Republic are currently leading the way in their respective qualification groups. In Europe, Denmark, Greece, Slovakia, Germany, Spain, England, Serbia, Italy, and the Netherlands are atop the groups. Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile are currently looking good in South America. Qualifying matches in Africa and the North /Central America and Caribbean divisions have yet to commence.
Once qualifying concludes and sets the stage for the December 2009 draw ceremony in Cape Town, the 32 World Cup participants will be placed into eight groups of four teams. Each team in a group plays every other team in its group and the top two teams (16 total) advance to the knockout stage, which will take place between June 26, 2009 and June 29.
Round-robin group play will be held from June 11 to June 25.
In the first round of the knockout stage, the eight group winners play the eight group runner-ups. From there, the remainder of the tournament is single elimination. The losers of the semifinals, however, will square off in a third-place match held on July 10 in Port Elizabeth.
Italy is the defending champion, having defeated France 5-3 in penalty kicks in the 2006 title match. Brazil, which won World Cups most recently in 1994 and 2002, owns the most World Cup titles with five. Italy has four and Germany, the 2006 host nation, has three. Italy is currently third in the FIFA rankings, while Brazil is fifth and Germany is second. Spain is the top-ranked team, while the Netherlands is the other team in the Top 5. All five countries should be serious contenders in South Africa.
